Introduction
What if people could generate income from items they already own while helping others access products without the upfront cost of purchasing them?
That question formed the foundation of BorrowLoop, a peer-to-peer rental marketplace designed to connect item owners with users looking for temporary access to equipment, tools, electronics, and other everyday products.
This prototype was developed to explore the viability of a community-driven rental platform and demonstrate how the concept could be brought to life through an investor-ready product experience.
The Challenge
Many people own valuable items that spend the majority of their time unused.
At the same time, there are countless situations where consumers need access to an item for a short period but cannot justify purchasing it outright.
Existing marketplaces primarily focus on buying and selling goods, leaving a gap in the market for a platform dedicated to short-term rentals between individuals.
The challenge was to design a solution that would:
Allow users to list items quickly and easily
Create trust between renters and lenders
Simplify the rental process
Support future scalability
Provide a compelling user experience for both sides of the marketplace
The Objective
The goal was to create a high-fidelity prototype that demonstrated the complete BorrowLoop experience.
Rather than developing a fully functional application, the focus was on validating the concept, refining the user journey, and producing a clickable product experience suitable for stakeholder reviews, user testing, and investor demonstrations.
Discovery and Product Strategy
Before designing the platform, the core user journeys were mapped to identify the minimum experience required for a successful marketplace.
Two primary user personas were identified:
Item Owners
Users looking to generate income by renting out items they already own.
Borrowers
Users seeking affordable short-term access to products without purchasing them outright.
From these personas, the key platform workflows were established.
Core User Journeys
The prototype focused on the most critical marketplace interactions:
User Registration and Onboarding
New users can create an account, complete their profile, and begin exploring the platform.
Listing an Item
Owners can:
Upload photos
Add descriptions
Set pricing
Define availability
Publish listings
Browsing and Discovery
Borrowers can:
Search available items
Browse categories
Filter results
View listing details
Booking and Rental Requests
Users can:
Select rental dates
Submit booking requests
Review pricing
Confirm reservations
Rental Management
Owners can:
Review requests
Approve bookings
Manage active rentals

Prototype Features
The BorrowLoop prototype included several key features designed to demonstrate the platform's potential.
Marketplace Homepage
A modern marketplace experience highlighting featured listings, categories, and recommended items.
Search and Filtering
Users can quickly discover relevant products through category-based browsing and search functionality.
Product Listing Pages
Detailed item pages provide:
Images
Pricing information
Availability
Owner information
Rental details
User Dashboard
A centralised dashboard enables users to manage:
Listings
Bookings
Rental history
Earnings
Mobile-First Experience
The prototype was designed with responsive usability in mind, ensuring a seamless experience across devices.
Design Approach
The design philosophy behind BorrowLoop focused on simplicity, trust, and accessibility.
Key design principles included:
Clear navigation
Fast access to listings
Minimal friction during booking
Marketplace familiarity
Scalable component-based design
The interface was intentionally designed to feel familiar to users who have previously used platforms such as rental marketplaces and peer-to-peer sharing applications.
Outcome
The final prototype successfully demonstrated how BorrowLoop could operate as a scalable peer-to-peer rental platform.
The project provided:
A validated product concept
Interactive user journeys
A realistic marketplace experience
A foundation for future development
A demonstration-ready prototype for stakeholder presentations
Most importantly, it transformed an abstract idea into a tangible product experience that could be explored, tested, and refined.
Key Takeaways
Building a prototype before investing in full-scale development allows founders to:
Validate assumptions
Identify usability issues early
Gather stakeholder feedback
Improve investor presentations
Reduce product risk
BorrowLoop serves as an example of how rapid prototyping can accelerate the journey from concept to product vision.
